West Sumbawa, June 27, 2019 - Coconut fiber processing business is one of the fostered Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (Amman Mineral) in conducting community development programs around the Batu Hijau mine, West Sumbawa Regency. Before developing this business, coconet processing entrepreneurs in Maluk Village received technical training from Amman Mineral. This effort is carried out by young people and housewives from the local village, so it is very helpful to increase family income. Every day on average they can produce 40 rolls of coconet which are then sold to Amman Mineral for Rp267,900 / roll. The average number of coconet purchases per year is around 6630 roll, if the price is 267 thousand per roll, the average annual purchase amount is 1.7 billion rupiah. In addition to meeting the needs of the Amman Mineral, coconets are also ordered by other mining companies operating in the Dompu region, West Nusa Tenggara.
Coconet is a coconut fiber that is spun and functions to prevent land reclamation from landslides and erosion. The manufacturing process is by attaching a piece of coconut fiber to the spinning machine, then the veins of the coconut fiber or called coco fiber are connected until the length reaches 15 meters. To connect it, the workers walk backwards while twisting the coconut fibers until the desired size is obtained. Next, the coconet is woven 30 meters wide before being rolled up.
Since 2014, Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara ("Amman Mineral") has been using coconet coconut fibers produced by several local business units under the guidance of the company in Maluk Village, Sekongkang District, West Sumbawa, for the purpose of the Batu Hijau mine reclamation area. Throughout this year, the company has purchased 5408 roll coconets (1 roll = 30 m2) to meet the 2019 reclamation plan. Until the first quarter of 2019 the total area of ex-mining land that had been reclaimed at the Batu Hijau mine reached 701.89 hectares of the total 2,739.45 hectares were cleared for mining areas and other supporting facilities.
Some community business development programs that have been initiated by Amman Mineral since 2017 and will continue to be included include seaweed cultivation, palm sugar processing, honey bee cultivation, laying and broiler breeding, and catfish farming. Overall, all social responsibility activities carried out by the company have benefited 17 villages in 3 sub-districts around the mine in particular and 5 other sub-districts in West Sumbawa Regency in general.
